Is a way of working that engages the client in their own learning, develops confidence, self care and a huge range of practical skills.
Forest schools doesn’t need a forest! Being outside is a very powerful tool to use when talking about developing the skills, confidences, just being outdoors and away from the regular learning environments encourages different behavior and brings a quality to the experience that is very different to working wholly indoors. This effect can be gained almost anywhere, allotment site, nature reserves, school grounds...
What makes this work is the method of working rather than the size of the wood land. A one off day out in the wilds of the country is great thing, a lot can be experienced but having access to the same area through out the seasons and making a real connection with it throughout the seasons is a very powerful experience that will not only develop understanding of how seasons change, how we fit into them and we connect with-ourselves.
During your forest school experience you might do things like lighting and cooking on fires, learning how to use a range of tools safely, build shelters, create environmental art, play hide and seek and challenge what you think you’re capable of.
